A self-priming pump has been specifically designed to re-prime itself when under lift conditions. These pumps can lift because they include a special 'fattened belly' type of volute (casing) that holds a small amount of liquid in it, even when the suction pipe is evacuated. They also include a flapper style check valve built into the pump suction port.
